The curious nature of happiness

Well, while I sit here talking nonsense about bugs, Fame, and Harry Potter, a good friend of mine secretly starts writing about laziness, boredom, and social issues. I say "secretly" because I had just about given up on the man; I stopped checking his blog. My astute and aware wife let me know that he was back in on the action.

I mention all of this because:
1) It's fun to link on the web because that's what makes the web a web.
2) As I was reading about loneliness and despair I was reminded about how, no matter how happy I feel, when it comes to summing up in an e-mail message or blog entry, I always end up with loneliness and despair.

Why does this happen? I am, in general, a very happy person. I have a wonderful wife, a caring family, an interesting job (at least it keeps me interested, most of the time), and I can't think of anything that is really missing. Perhaps I think that's too boring to tell people about, so I do all I can to come up with drama about what is or isn't happening just to sound like my life is more interesting than sweet bliss.

So, I think what I'm trying to say is that I'm happy, and I think that makes my life uninteresting.

Welcome back Joe!

Something to get excited about

Is it strange for a 27-year-old to be excited about the coming of the 5th Harry Potter book this weekend? I didn't think so, but when I mentioned my excitement at lunch today, my coworkers exchanged glances and suddenly I was a lunatic. I don't think it's that strange. Although, now that I think about it, when I was reading the 4th book to and from work on the subway, I did have a whole story about how I was a grade school teacher and I was thinking about teaching it in my class.

Anyway, lunatic or not, I can't wait!

Poetic

I just did a little research of my own to see how many people were wondering about the "body electric." It turns out that it's a reference to a Walt Whitman poem. Now maybe if I had a little culture, I would have known that. Is it wrong of me to give more credence to a poet than a lyricist?

How's this for gory?

I saw the movie Fame last night and I have to say that I just don't get the appeal. I enjoyed the first part, the auditions, but after that, there didn't really seem to be a story. Or maybe what I mean is that there were too many stories to tell within the context of a movie. Maybe that's why they turned it into a TV show. You know, the old TV show, not the new one.

Anyway, I had this dream a few hours ago where I designed this alarm clock that made this beautiful chiming noise to wake you up. If that didn't wake you up after a few minutes, the voice of Ozzy Osbourne came on to say, "Your piggy nature is death!"

And then...

By the way, what the hell is a "body electric"?

Slow-roasted

I remember that bug. I removed it from the light fixture.

Then I told you a story about how back in the Bronx I had this halogen lamp. One day, I saw the shadow of a big huge bug that had got caught in the lamp. Then there was a burning smell throughout the apartment because the bug was getting cooked from the massive amounts of heat put off by a halogen lamp. That was one crispy critter when I finally freed it. Oh, it was dead too.
